Our friends and publishing partners at The Atlantic noted an interesting fact Wednesday: Apple's retail stores now get almost as many visitors as Disney's theme parks and resorts.
In fact, in Q1 2013, Apple said that a record 121 million people
visited its stores. That's close to the estimated 125 million visitors
that Disney's parks and resorts get each quarter.
Those numbers were so close, in fact, that we were curious as to how
the revenues and profits of Apple retail and Disney parks compare. Apple
Stores have long been known for making the most money in retail per
square foot, but everyone knows how expensive Disney parks are. Surely
they make more money per visitor?
Although Disney's parks and resorts revenues were up 7% in the last
quarter — to a whopping $3.4 billion — that pales in comparison to the
$6.4 billion Apple got from its stores.
That's understandable. Not only does Apple have nearly 400 retail
stores, its average item price is far higher than the price of goods at
Disney World or Disneyland.
That's why it's even more impressive to compare quarterly operating
income, or earnings. Disney made $577 million in profit off of its Parks
and Resorts division last quarter. Apple made $1.6 billion profit.
Either way, the estate of the late Steve Jobs (that is, his widow
Laurene Powell Jobs) wins. The late Apple co-founder was also Disney's
biggest shareholder.
Next up, figuring out which line is shorter — Space Mountain or the Genius Bar.
